The Unidad Académica Campesina partners with numerous groups and institutions in Bolivia in carrying out its mission of social justice and sustainability such as the municipalities of Coroico and Caranavi, the local “sub-centrales” (indigenous governance bodies), the Catholic University of Bolivia in La Paz, USAID, the Catholic aid agency CARITAS, and numerous individual farmers and peasant organizations. In the U.S., the College maintains partnerships with several esteemed academic institutions that give UAC-CP students access to cutting edge theory and technology and create an environment for international collaboration. ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS South Dakota State University (SDSU); Brookings, SD was the first academic partner to UAC-CP, dating back to the College’s inception in 1993. Exchanges with SDSU over this time have helped promote initiatives in nutrition, environment and biodiversity. Over one dozen professors have made visits to the College, many on a yearly basis, to teach UAC-CP students, guide their thesis projects and conduct research. Since 2000, the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN has been a partner with the UAC. Faculty and students from both institutions conducted an extensive health survey of the communities served by UAC-CP’s extension program, with follow-up studies, under the auspices of a Fulbright Scholarship, planned for the future. Librarians from St. Catherine’s have set up a sister library relationship with the UAC, where there are two lending libraries, as books are too expensive for students to own. A partnership with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UW-RF) was finalized in April 2006. Through a grant to the Carmen Pampa Fund from the Oswald Family Foundation, UW-RF is organizing UAC-CP’s English as a Foreign Language program. UW-RF is also instrumental in guiding the new Eco-tourism major at UAC-CP.
